Florida Birth Certificate Online Application
A certified birth certificate helps establish your identity for a passport, school enrollment, or other official paperwork. Florida’s Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, issues birth certificates that you can request by mail, in person, or online.
Prepare your request with EaseGov’s guided application and know which documents to include before submitting it.
EaseGov is an independent, paid application preparation service with guided forms and application review. The government issues your certified copy, and government fees are separate from EaseGov’s service fees.
How to Get a Birth Certificate in Florida
Start by confirming that the birth occurred in Florida and that you qualify to receive the record. Choose the certificate format your receiving organization needs, then prepare the birth details, your identification, and payment.
You can apply directly to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville by mail or at its walk-in office. County health departments also issue Florida birth records, although available years, services, and fees differ. For example, Pinellas directs requests for births before 1930 to the state bureau.
If you are working out how to get a birth certificate in Florida from another state, you can use a mail or online route. You do not need to return to the county where you were born to begin your request.

The state’s standard online ordering route provides computer-generated certificates; manually produced photocopy certificates must be requested directly from the bureau by mail.

Who Can Order a Florida Birth Certificate?
Florida birth records are generally confidential until they are more than 125 years old. For a confidential record, eligible applicants include the following people:
- Parent named on the birth record
- Person named on the certificate, age 18 or older
- Person authorized by a court order
- Legal guardian with guardianship documentation
- Legal representative with documentation establishing their authority
State law also allows qualifying certified homeless youth and certain minors whose legal disabilities of nonage have been removed to obtain their own records. Contact the bureau for the documentation required for these situations.
If the person named on the record has died, an adult spouse, child, grandchild, or sibling may apply with a copy of the death certificate. The issued birth certificate is marked “Deceased.”
An applicant who is not independently eligible may use a notarized release affidavit signed by an eligible requester. The bureau requires identification copies for both people and any supporting documentation. Records more than 125 years old are available to any requester unless sealed by court order.
What You Need to Request a Florida Birth Certificate
Complete your Florida birth certificate application with the following:
- Person’s details: full name at birth, sex, date of birth, city or county of birth, and parents’ full names before their first marriages.
- Your details: full name, relationship to the person, mailing address, telephone number, and signature.
Prepare a valid, unexpired photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state identification card, passport, or military identification card. Mailed requests need a clear, readable photocopy.
Include guardianship papers, a court order, authorization documents, or a death certificate when your eligibility depends on them.
For a direct mail request to the bureau, pay by check or money order payable to Vital Statistics. Do not mail cash. If you do not know the exact birth year, specify the years to search and include the additional search fees.
How Much Is a Birth Certificate in Florida?
The cost depends on whether you order from the state bureau, a county office, or an online service. The bureau lists these direct-order fees.
The first-copy fee includes a nonrefundable $9 search fee. For the state bureau’s VitalChek route, the first computer-generated certificate is $19, including rush processing, plus a $7 vendor processing fee. Additional copies and optional UPS delivery cost extra.
County fees are different. Pinellas lists $13 for the first birth certificate and $8 for an additional certificate; Miami-Dade lists $20 and $16, respectively. EaseGov’s preparation service carries a separate fee, so review the service price and government charges before paying.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Florida Birth Certificate?
The state bureau lists normal processing of 3–5 business days for computer-generated birth certificates, excluding shipping. Photocopy certificates and amended records take additional time.
Rush processing costs an additional $10 and gives your request priority. For mail orders, mark the envelope “RUSH.” Rush orders still travel by standard USPS unless you provide a special prepaid delivery envelope.
You can sometimes get a birth certificate the same day in Florida by applying in person. Hamilton County, for example, states that eligible walk-in requests are processed immediately. Availability depends on the office, the record, and complete documentation.
At the state bureau, same-day walk-in service for a photocopy certificate requires the $10 rush fee and is available only when the office can provide it. An online application does not guarantee same-day issuance or delivery. Check with the issuing office before traveling for an urgent request.
Long Form Birth Certificate in Florida
If you have been asked for a Florida long form birth certificate, confirm the exact information and format the receiving organization requires. Florida’s bureau describes its standard options as computer-generated certifications and manually produced photocopy certificates.
-
Computer-generated certificate
A computer-generated certificate is an official certified record printed on security paper with Florida’s embossed seal.
-
Manually produced photocopy certificate
A photocopy certificate is also certified, printed on security paper, and manually produced, with a higher first-copy fee and additional processing time.
Tell the bureau if you need a certified reproduction of the original record rather than the standard computer-generated format. Manually produced photocopy certificates are not available through the state’s VitalChek ordering route. For international use, check the apostille requirements before choosing a certificate.
How to Get an Apostille for a Florida Birth Certificate
A Florida birth certificate apostille authenticates the issuing official’s signature for use in a country participating in the Hague Apostille Convention. The Florida Department of State issues the apostille; the Department of Health supplies the birth certificate.
First, check the destination country’s certificate requirements with its consulate or the organization receiving your document. Then request a birth certificate for apostille purposes from the Bureau of Vital Statistics. The Department of State’s guidance calls for a bureau-issued certificate signed by the state registrar.
After receiving your certificate, send it to the Department of State with the apostille request, destination country, payment, and a prepaid return envelope or airbill. The apostille fee for a bureau-issued vital record is $10 per document, separate from certificate and shipping charges.
If the destination country does not participate in the convention, ask about the applicable notarial certification and any further legalization steps. A standard birth certificate application does not automatically include an apostille.
