What is TSA PreCheck® & Why Use EaseGov?

TSA PreCheck® is an official US government program operated by the TSA. It grants pre-approved, low-risk travelers access to expedited security lanes at over 200 US airports. You keep your shoes, belts, and light jackets on. Laptops and 3-1-1 liquids stay in your bag.

EaseGov does not grant status: only the US government can do that.

We are a private technology company acting as your preparation partner. We charge a service fee to provide hard-coded efficiency: a smart application path, human-verified accuracy to catch data mismatches, and personalized guidance for your biometric interview.

  • General Eligibility Requirements

Before applying, you must meet the Department of Homeland Security’s strict criteria:

    • Blue check
Citizenship status: You must be a US citizen, US national, or a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR).
    • Blue check
Clean record: You cannot have certain disqualifying criminal convictions or pending charges.
    • Blue check
Security clearance: You must pass a background check and not be on security threat lists.

Small errors lead to big delays. If the name on your government-issued ID doesn't exactly match the name on your airline reservation, the TSA system won't trigger your benefits.

We review your application to ensure your suffixes, middle names, and birth dates are formatted correctly, preventing the common "missing logo" issue at the gate.

  • Official Enrollment Providers and Fees: IDEMIA, Telos & CLEAR

You must pay the government enrollment fee directly to the provider at your interview. This is separate from EaseGov’s preparation fee:

    • IDEMIA ($78 for new enrollment, $70 for renewal): The largest network, often inside Staples stores.
    • Telos ($85): Operates primarily out of Office Depot locations.
    • CLEAR ($77 for enrollment): Enrollment centers are usually inside major airport terminals.

Note: Official government fees may vary by state-specific provider requirements. These fees are separate from the EaseGov service fee.

  • The Mandatory Biometric Interview

EaseGov handles the complex digital pre-enrollment. However, all first-time applicants must attend a brief, 10-minute in-person appointment. An official agent will verify your original identity documents, take digital fingerprints, and capture a photo to complete your background check.

We provide a custom-built checklist to give you peace of mind as you prepare for your interview.

  • Understanding Your Known Traveler Number (KTN)

Once the TSA approves your background check (usually 3–5 days), you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN). It is valid for 5 years. Add this KTN to your airline profiles to ensure the "TSA PRE" logo prints on your boarding pass.

Note: A KTN is only effective if the name on your airline profile matches your government ID exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions About TSA PreCheck®

Toggle faqs

What is TSA PreCheck and what does it do?

TSA PreCheck is an official expedited security screening program managed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to pass through security checkpoints without removing their shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts, or light jackets at participating airports.

By streamlining the physical screening process, TSA PreCheck can save travelers significant time and hassle when traveling through busy U.S. airports, especially for frequent flyers.

Toggle faqs

How does TSA PreCheck work at the airport?

Once your application is officially approved, you’re assigned a unique Known Traveler Number (KTN). You must enter this specific KTN into your reservation when booking a flight with a participating airline.

If authorized for that trip, the TSA PreCheck indicator is printed directly on your boarding pass. This indicator allows you to access and use the dedicated, faster security screening lanes located at participating U.S. airports.

Toggle faqs

How long is TSA PreCheck good for?

A TSA PreCheck membership is valid for exactly five years starting directly from your official date of approval. Travelers must actively renew their membership before this five-year period completely ends in order to maintain uninterrupted access to expedited airport security screening benefits.

You can typically begin the renewal process up to six months prior to your expiration date, to make sure your Known Traveler Number remains active for your upcoming flights.

Toggle faqs

Is TSA PreCheck worth getting?

TSA PreCheck is generally considered highly cost-effective for anyone who flies out of U.S. airports more than once a year. The significant time saved waiting in long security lines, combined with the physical convenience of not unpacking bags or removing outer clothing, usually makes the five-year investment worthwhile.

For a relatively low fee, PreCheck means frequent business travelers and occasional flyers for vacations and family visits experience a much smoother, less stressful journey through the airport terminal.

Toggle faqs

What’s the difference between CLEAR and TSA PreCheck?

CLEAR uses biometric data, such as iris scans or fingerprints, to verify a traveler’s identity before the physical security screening stage. This can help eligible travelers move through the ID-check portion of airport security faster and proceed toward the screening area.

In contrast, TSA PreCheck® applies at the physical screening checkpoint itself. It gives approved travelers access to expedited screening lanes where they can usually keep shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops, and 3-1-1 liquids in place.

Toggle faqs

Does TSA PreCheck count as a Real ID?

No, a TSA PreCheck approval or your assigned Known Traveler Number (KTN) is not a physical identification card and does not count as a REAL ID. TSA PreCheck is strictly a traveler facilitation program for expedited screening.

When arriving at the airport, you still need to present a physically valid, REAL ID-compliant state driver’s license, an unexpired U.S. passport, or another acceptable form of federal identification to pass through the security checkpoint and fly domestically.

Toggle faqs

Can military spouses get TSA PreCheck for free?

Active-duty U.S. military personnel automatically receive free TSA PreCheck benefits. They can access these expedited screening lanes simply by entering their 10-digit Department of Defense (DoD) ID number as their Known Traveler Number when booking flight reservations.

However, military spouses and dependents don’ receive this specific benefit automatically. To use the expedited lanes, family members must apply for the program individually, attend an enrollment appointment, and pay the standard government enrollment fee themselves.

Toggle faqs

Can family members use TSA PreCheck® lanes?

Children aged 12 and under can generally accompany an eligible adult and use TSA PreCheck® lanes without a separate application. Teenagers aged 13 to 17 may also use the lane if they are on the same reservation and the TSA PreCheck® indicator appears on their boarding pass.

Other family members, including spouses or dependents over 17, must individually apply for TSA PreCheck® and be approved to access expedited lanes. This ensures that all travelers in the lane have verified eligibility and maintains the integrity of the TSA PreCheck® program.

Toggle faqs

Does TSA PreCheck include Global Entry?

No. Global Entry is a separate international customs program that includes TSA PreCheck benefits, but TSA PreCheck alone does not grant you access to Global Entry.

Toggle faqs

Do I need to carry a physical TSA PreCheck card?

No. While some members receive a physical card (if they applied through Global Entry), standard TSA PreCheck relies entirely on your KTN being electronically attached to your boarding pass.

Toggle faqs

What happens if my KTN expires?

You have a 1-year grace period after your status expires to renew your status online and retain your original number. If you wait longer than a year, you must apply as a new applicant and attend a new biometric interview.

Toggle faqs

What is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is a voluntary program that uses facial recognition technology to verify your identity at the airport.

Instead of presenting a physical ID or boarding pass to a TSA officer, you simply look into a camera at a dedicated biometric pod. The system matches your live photo against the digital images already on file from your US passport to instantly confirm your identity and flight details. However, you must still carry a physical REAL-ID-compliant ID with you in case an officer requests it, or the system fails to match your photo.

To participate, you must be a current TSA PreCheck member, have an active profile with a participating airline (and opt-in through their app or website), and have your valid passport information saved to that profile.
